In this painting from the Vestige series, a radiant figure emerges within a rounded, stone-like arch. Its form shimmers in fiery tones of orange, red, and gold, layered in shifting textures that suggest both presence and dissolution. Against the weight of the dark wall that encloses it, the glowing figure recalls an apparition drawn from myth and memory.
Reinike titled the work Mithras after the ancient Roman god who, according to legend, was born from a rock. Once central to a mystery religion that spread across the Roman Empire, Mithras and his rites eventually vanished, leaving only fragments behind. Reinike uses this image of emergence from stone to reflect on how faiths rise and fade, their remnants still carrying echoes of influence and meaning.
