Starting Point

A sharp eye may recognize the arch in this painting. It is the Arch at the University of Georgia in Athens, the official symbol of the University and the gateway to its campus. Its three pillars represent Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation—the Georgia state motto. Traditionally, undergraduates do not pass beneath the Arch until they graduate, making it both an entrance to the University and a symbol of the destination toward which their education leads.

Wisdom, Justice and Moderation—a code to live by—the books suggest their content with the letters on each, scattered across the checkerboard in front of the Arch.

To Reinike, knowledge is power and enlightenment. His game-board echoes the University's colors, bringing the idea of education into the larger game of life.
