In this diptych, Reinike employs the onion as a study in form and contrast. The fresh onions, shown with their roots and vivid green leaves intact, stand sharply against a deep black background interrupted by faint circles — a reference to the ancient Egyptian symbolism of the onion, whose many layers were associated with eternity and the cycles of life.

The contrast between the vivid, freshly pulled onions and the cut circles behind them gives Vidalia I and Vidalia II an unexpected twist.
