Gala

Gala is composed of horizontal bands in tones of a blue-gray, white, golden tans, and black that move rhythmically across the canvas. The long central bands are interrupted at the edges by shorter opposing segments, creating a measured counterpoint that defines the composition. Layers of paint build a textured surface where structure and spontaneity coexist, and subtle shifts in tone and edge establish rhythm across the surface.

In this work, Callahan continues his examination of the relationships between color and form, allowing structure itself to become the source of expression.
