Oil and Graphite on Carved Wooden Panel
12 × 33 ½
$950
Shard III is part of Reinike’s series of carved paintings. The worn edges and partial forms give the work the character of a recovered artifact, with the partial circles at either end suggesting life that came before and life that continues after.
A horizontal band of circular medallions runs across the piece, each containing a distinct figure: one holding a basket, one with a bow and arrows, and one carrying a pitchfork.
Reinike depicts three essential stages in the progression of civilization: a gatherer collecting food, a hunter equipped with bow and arrows, and an agrarian who shapes and controls his environment. Together, they trace the shift from subsistence to intention—how human communities moved from relying on what the land offered to actively cultivating it, making settled life possible rather than requiring constant movement in search of sustenance.
